Online Out-of-Stock situations happen. Customers prefer if that’s not the case, but they understand that it does. What they have little patience for is when they’re informed a product is out of stock at the last possible moment. Needless to say they’re frustrated and often times just leave.

Brands would not treat their customers this way in the store, but some seem to think it’s OK online.
